3 Traits of a Successful Engineering Manager

    Last updated 28 days ago

Do you ever look around at roads, buildings, and cars, and think: “How on earth did all of these get made?” In fact, nearly every major project that you see exists thanks to a team of talented of individuals that was led by a competent engineering manager. If you’re thinking of becoming an engineering manager, you should consider these three important traits and settle on our college in St. Louis:

    1. Clear Communication

Since it’s up to an engineering manager to coordinate the efforts of several team members, clear and concise communication is a must. If an engineering manager is vague with his instructions, there are likely to be deficiencies or redundancies that can delay a project and cost thousands of dollars. Since the engineering manager is also responsible for dealing with clients, he also needs to know how to effectively translate technical jargon into more familiar terms.

    2. Excellent People Skills

Though it’s important for an engineering manager to have a broad understanding of science and technology, his job mainly involves constant interactions with people. An engineering manager may recruit and dismiss team members, speak with outside specialists, and confer with everyone involved with a particular project. All of these tasks require someone who understands how people think, how to cater to their needs, and how to get them to work well together

    3. Detail-Oriented

Since engineering managers are in charge of making sure every aspect of a given project meshes well, it’s necessary for managers to pay close attention to details. This could be anything from proofreading a project proposal to correcting design mistakes. Though you’ll have to wear a lot of hats as an engineering manager, if you’re up for the challenge, this career is very rewarding.

If a career as an engineering manager sounds appealing to you, contact Missouri Tech today. Our dedicated teaching staff at our college in St. Louis can teach you all the skills you need to know. To learn how to enroll, call us at (636) 487-4146.
